With accolades that include New York State Winery of the Year and being listed as one of the Top 100 Wineries by Wine & Spirits magazine, it’s no surprise that Sheldrake Point Winery is on my list of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes!
However, this is not your traditional winery. In fact, Sheldrake Point Winery is focused on sustainable winemaking, from vineyard to bottle. So much so that one of their buildings is powered by solar and the other by geothermal energy.
As a result, they’ve mastered the art of sustainability without sacrificing the experience – all while offering a beautiful place to enjoy wine.

5. Swedish Hill Winery
One of the most awarded wineries in the Finger Lakes is Swedish Hill Winery. This Cayuga Lake winery also has two other sister wineries, the Goose Watch Winery on Cayuga Lake and Penguin Bay in Seneca.
Although, Swedish Hill Winery is located in Romulus, just west of Cayuga Lake, and is open daily all year round. It’s also an essential stop among the top Finger Lakes wineries.
Because for over 30 years, this family-run winery has grown and yet still maintains a quaint sense of charm. They are also on the famed Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and have a large assortment of wines including whites, reds, sparkling, and dessert.
During the nicer weather, you can even opt to enjoy your tasting outdoors! However, one of the biggest draws to Swedish Hill Winery, beyond the wine, is Doobie!

7. Bright Leaf Vineyard
Cayuga lake does hold some of the best wineries in the Finger lakes. It becomes really hard to choose between all of them. Another iconic winery that I had to add to the already extensive list is the Bright Leaf vineyard. The vineyard is small compared to many of the others in the vicinity, but don’t underestimate its potential based on its size.
The Bright Leaf vineyard has been winning medals for its wine since 2017 where it won the gold for its Cabernet Franc. This was at the 2021 Wine Classic. It isn’t just the Cabernet Franc that brought laurels home. Their Semi-dry Riesling went on to win not one but two golds in the 2021 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. 2022 brought in the gold medal for the 2020 Reserve Chardonnay and the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon.
One of the reasons why their wines are so special is because they try to pay attention to every aspect of the cultivation of grapes. From the preparation of the soil to the pruning of the plants, everything is done in order that the grapes cultivated are of the highest quality.
Pro Tip: If you have a sweet tooth, you can pay an extra $2 and have a wine tasting with local artisan chocolates.

8. Thirsty Owl Wine Company
The Thirsty Owl Wine company is the perfect place to head to if you want to take your dog along with you when you head out for some wine. This place even allows dogs into the tasting room. Provided they are on a leash of course!
Another big bonus is that the Thirsty Owl has both indoor and outdoor seating which is great because when the weather is great, sitting outdoors is the thing to do. Nothing beats the fresh air, right?
It also helps that the Thirsty Owl Wine company is one of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes. With good wine, man’s best friend and the perfect view, the troubles of the city just fade away.
Oh and did I mention that it is also a great place for lunch? Yes! I’m not talking itty bitty finger food and snacks. The winery has a lovely menu where you can order a nice filling meal alongside your wine. This is one of the reasons why I love to stop here mid-day.
Pro Tip: There is a cap on 10 tasters for a tasting tour. This is so that they can give you the full feel of the tasting experience. It however also means that if you come in a big group, you may have to split up.

Another fabulous Keuka Lake winery is Keuka Springs Vineyard. Set on the eastern shores of Keuka Lake, this family-run winery began in the early 1980s. In fact, the vines they planted in 1981 still produce the incredible fruit that goes into their wines today.
Additionally, Keuka Springs Vineyard is one of the top wineries in the Finger Lakes that is on the Keuka Lake Wine Trail and that serves a wide range of varietals.
Their selection of award-winning wines also features everything from a dry rosé to a sweet ice wine. In addition to these, there are also ten different vegan wines available.
